2022-23 GSPA Student Ambassadors have been chosen and we are so excited!

Reserve your spot at the 2022 GSPA Fall Conference on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at the University of Georgia’s Tate Student Center. The cost is $15 per student. Membership dues cover adviser registration fees. Registration will close Sept. 16, or when the the event reaches capacity.

GSPA will offer two on-the-spot contests during the Fall Conference Sept. 20 at the UGA Tate Student Center. Both will be open to student attendees of any publication type. There are no entry fees for either of these contests.

Energetic and engaged students interested in expanding their leadership skills, bringing a new vision and shaping GSPA are invited to apply to be part of the GSPA Student Ambassadors program. Applications are due Aug. 19.

GSPA is now accepting General Excellence and Individual Award contest entries for yearbooks and literary magazines published in the 2021-22 academic year. The deadline to submit to the contests is July 31, 2022. Please email gspa@uga.edu to request accommodations if your books will be delayed or delivered later in the summer.

Mark your calendars for the next Fall Conference Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022, at the University of Georgia’s Tate Student Center. The event will feature several rounds of concurrent sessions covering a variety of topics of importance to scholastic journalists and advisers. Conference extras will include on-the-spot critiques and contests, as well as the first edition carry in competition.

Mercer University's Center for Collaborative Journalism and the Georgia Scholastic Press Association will host a High School Journalism Advisers Workshop June 6-7 at the Center for Collaborative Journalism on Mercer's Macon campus. The workshop itself will be free to attend and will include sessions such as introduction to audio, introduction to photo and video, on writing and editing and crafting story ideas.

Two-hundred fifty high school journalists and teachers learned about ways they can put purpose at the center of their media programs during the 2022 GSPA Spring Awards ceremony on April 11, 2022, at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Keynote speaker Keysha Lee, an award-winning show host and filmmaker, businesswoman and author, delivered the inspiring message. She defined purpose as “a sense that the work you’re doing is deeply needed.”

Adviser of the Year recognizes a journalism adviser who goes beyond the “call of duty” in supporting his or her staff.

GSPA and its members from across the state will celebrate the best in scholastic journalism at the 2022 Spring Workshop and Awards. The event will be held at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education on Monday, April 11. Check-in begins at 8 a.m. A workshop will lead the event, 9-11:45 a.m., followed by an awards luncheon at noon, catered by the Georgia Center. Professional dress is suggested. Register here.

Author, business owner, executive producer and filmmaker Keysha Lee will share an inspirational message with high school journalists and teachers at the Georgia Scholastic Press Association’s Workshop and Awards on Monday, April 11 at the University of Georgia Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Melissa Liu, co-editor-in-chief for The Messenger newspaper at Northview High School in Johns Creek, Georgia, has been named the 2022 Georgia Champion Journalist of the Year by the Georgia Scholastic Press Association and the Journalism Education Association.

Winter Conference attendees explored the theme of “Reflection” through the On-the-Spot Photography contest.

Students showcased their experiences at the Winter Conference on Feb. 10, 2022 through the On-the-Spot Social Media Contest. Posts were featured on Instagram and Twitter in a variety of ways.

Seniors and juniors are invited to enter the Georgia Champion Journalist and Junior Journalist of the Year contests. Entrants must create a comprehensive online portfolio to showcase their best journalistic pieces, skills and achievements. There are no entry fees for either of these contests. All completed entries must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 23, 2022. This year’s contests feature increased monetary prizes!

GSPA is now accepting entries for the 2022 First Amendment Essay Competition. As an essential part of our democracy, the press and education, the First Amendment remains an important area of study and review. Students should write 300-500 words addressing the new prompt for 2022.
