Sydney Shadrix will deliver the keynote address to high school journalists and teachers at the Georgia Scholastic Press Association’s Spring Workshop and Awards on March 27, 2023, at the University of Georgia Georgia Center for Continuing Education.

The 2022-23 Spring General Excellence Competition and Individual Awards contest are now open! Submit your best work from broadcasts, newsmagazines, newspapers and news websites. Please note this is a firm deadline because the Spring Workshop and Awards is Monday, March 27.

GSPA is now accepting entries for the 2023 First Amendment Essay Competition. As an essential part of our democracy, the press, and education, the First Amendment remains a crucial area of study and review. The contest is free to enter, and it makes for a great end-of-the-semester class assignment. Deadline: Jan. 31, 2023.

Each year, GSPA recognizes the top student journalist in the state with the Georgia Champion Journalist Award. The winner receives a cash prize and represents the state in the Journalism Education Association's National Journalist of the Year competition. The deadline for both the Champion Journalist and Junior Champion Journalist Awards is Jan. 22, 2023.

2022-23 GSPA Student Ambassadors have been chosen and we are so excited!

Reserve your spot at the 2022 GSPA Fall Conference on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at the University of Georgia’s Tate Student Center. The cost is $15 per student. Membership dues cover adviser registration fees. Registration will close Sept. 16, or when the the event reaches capacity.

GSPA will offer two on-the-spot contests during the Fall Conference Sept. 20 at the UGA Tate Student Center. Both will be open to student attendees of any publication type. There are no entry fees for either of these contests.

Energetic and engaged students interested in expanding their leadership skills, bringing a new vision and shaping GSPA are invited to apply to be part of the GSPA Student Ambassadors program. Applications are due Aug. 19.

GSPA is now accepting General Excellence and Individual Award contest entries for yearbooks and literary magazines published in the 2021-22 academic year. Mark your calendars for the next Fall Conference Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2022, at the University of Georgia’s Tate Student Center. The event will feature several rounds of concurrent sessions covering a variety of topics of importance to scholastic journalists and advisers. Conference extras will include on-the-spot critiques and contests, as well as the first edition carry in competition.

Mercer University's Center for Collaborative Journalism and the Georgia Scholastic Press Association will host a High School Journalism Advisers Workshop June 6-7 at the Center for Collaborative Journalism on Mercer's Macon campus. The workshop itself will be free to attend and will include sessions such as introduction to audio, introduction to photo and video, on writing and editing and crafting story ideas.

Two-hundred fifty high school journalists and teachers learned about ways they can put purpose at the center of their media programs during the 2022 GSPA Spring Awards ceremony on April 11, 2022, at the University of Georgia Center for Continuing Education. Keynote speaker Keysha Lee, an award-winning show host and filmmaker, businesswoman and author, delivered the inspiring message. She defined purpose as “a sense that the work you’re doing is deeply needed.”

Adviser of the Year recognizes a journalism adviser who goes beyond the “call of duty” in supporting his or her staff.
