SPLC to celebrate Student Press Freedom Day this February

Student Press Freedom Day kicks off Friday, Feb. 26, 2021.

Student Press Freedom Day kicks off Friday, Feb. 26, 2021.

From covering a global pandemic and its challenges to exposing racial injustice, student journalists adapted to demand transparency and empathy in their communities in 2020. The Student Press Law Center (SPLC) now plans to celebrate the contributions of student journalists and their advisers in light of difficult situations that sometimes put their positions and voices at risk.

Student newsrooms across the country will celebrate Student Press Freedom Day on Friday, Feb. 26, 2021. But before they do, the SPLC encourages student journalists to voice their ideas in news outlets across the country, calling for #StudentPressFreedom.

To help students craft op-ed pieces to publish on Student Press Freedom Day, the SPLC is offering a free training on Feb. 4. "Op-Ed Boot Camp" is set for 8 p.m. on Thursday. Veteran CNN and New York Times Journalist Steven A. Holmes will lead the discussion with an opportunity to be matched with a professional adviser as students craft and place their own opinion and editorial pieces for Student Press Freedom Day.
