Scholastic achievements celebrated, Spring awards announced
/GSPA recognized the many outstanding scholastic journalism achievements of its member schools April 9, 2019, at the UGA Georgia Center in Athens.
Recipients of awards administered throughout the year were honored, including the Summer Yearbook and Literary Magazine contest winners, Georgia Champion & Jr. Champion Journalists, First Amendment Essay finalists. Achievement Award winners and Broadcast, Newspaper, Newsmagazine and News Website contest winners were announced.
Grady College alumnus Dominic Brown, chief meteorologist at WIS-TV in Columbia, South Carolina, talked about his career path and inspired students by asking them to think about their own personal stories keeping the following in mind:
Be encouraged.
Have a passion for what you do.
Get an internship.
Find a mentor.
Do the Right Thing!
Check your social media accounts!
Give back when you can.
Speak Truth to Power.
With Power comes Responsibility.
A half-day workshop preceded the awards luncheon, which covered the topics of social media, First Amendment, staff to leadership, sports journalism, convergence, health and medical journalism, transitioning from high school to college, tips from judges, podcasting and copyediting. A team of University of Georgia students also led a TEDxUGA activity.
Awards will be mailed to all recipients who were unable to attend the celebration. More photos and stories to come!
