Free mentoring series hosted by Oregon to launch in January
/A free mentoring program hosted by the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication launches in January 2021. The Student Voice project, designed to support high school journalism programs in underserved and underrepresented communities, will help student publications improve writing and multimedia skills while offering a chance to circulate their work to a broader audience through a new mobile app.
On Fridays, collegiate journalism students will be available from 3:00-4:30 p.m. Eastern time (12:00-1:30 p.m. Pacific time) for a virtual newsroom Zoom session for high school students and advisers. The program offers the opportunity to discuss current headlines, hone story pitches and coach students on necessary skills. Organizers intend to record and archive sessions for those who cannot attend live, offering video tutorials accessible at any time.
The Student Voice mobile publication serves to republish select stories from high school journalism outlets. Developers plan to update content twice monthly, encouraging mainstream media organizations to reprint the best stories on designated sections of their website.
Student work submitted and/or developed through the program will be eligible for the Student Voice Awards competition on June 21, 2021.
